Voltaren Emulgel contains the active ingredient diclofenac diethylamine, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This gel relieves pain and reduces the inflammation that arthritis causes with joint stiffness, swelling, and tenderness. It is used to treat pain in up to 90% of adults with arthritis and in over 165,000 Australian adults with the condition rheumatoid arthritis.

Voltaren Gel is used as a pain reliever/fever reducer. It is used to relieve muscle, back, joint, or muscle pain due to various conditions. Voltaren Gel is used to relieve pain, swelling, and/or tenderness at the site of pain. Voltaren Gel is also used to reduce inflammation and swelling at the site of inflammation (oedema) caused by infection, autoimmune disorders, or surgery.

Voltaren Gel should be used with caution in patients with a history of asthma (wheezing).

Possible side effects

Patients who take Voltaren Gel should be monitored for:

• Nausea/vomiting
• Skin rash, itching/swelling, or skin irritation
• Hearing loss or ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
• Breast pain or tenderness
• Headache/clotting sensation
• Vaginal itching/itching

The most common side effects (incidence ≥35%) were fever, headache, muscle aches/pain, upset stomach, and nausea/vomiting. In addition, those who experience side effects more frequently include:

Children and adolescents ( 6 to 12 years old ) :

• No side effects have been reported with the use of the topical preparation.
• The most common side effects include: rash, itching/swelling skin/tiredness, feelings of well-being/being, emotional distress, and sensation of being hurt or sick.
• In those with a history of hypersensitivity/allergy to diclofenac or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Adverse reactions (incidence ≥35%) include : allergy to diclofenac, warfarin, aspirin, aspirin- or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, and aspirin-containing products such as the topical preparation.

Use with regard to other medicines and complementary therapies

Patients who take nonprescription products should be monitored for:

• Stomach bleeding
• Bleeding from the pea meal
• Skin rash, itching/swelling/skin irritation
• Mucocutaneous candidiasis

Patients who take topical preparations should be monitored for:

• Breast tenderness or enlargement
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing

Voltaren Gel should be used with caution in patients with a history of asthma, allergies to diclofenac, warfarin, aspirin, aspirin- or NSAIDs, or any other NSAID (aspirin containing products).

Patients who are on a steroid- or NSAID-based product and have had a severe reaction (e.g., chest pain/swelling, difficulty breathing) should use the product. If the product does not relieve the pain or swelling, or the reaction is not effective, it may be used with the lowest dose of the product (the lowest effective dose).

Patients who have a history of rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis should use the product. It is to be used with the lowest dose of rheumatoid arthritis and/or ankylosing spondylitis to ensure the product is effective.

Voltaren Emulgel Extra Strength is a gel based ondiclofenac diethylammonium.

Directions

Adults between 18 years and 60 years: Apply gel 2 times a day at 4-8 inches in an open, flat area of skin with the skin surrounding the gel and with at least one inch of skin between two grams of gel. Do not apply.
